Charles is the new it-place to have lunch in town. Opened just a few weeks ago, it is advertised as a chic sandwich café. The interior is simple and relaxing, with a nice mixture of old and new furniture. Food wise, you can choose between sandwiches, salads and a daily soup. They also serve deserts. But the star is most certainly the sandwich. The Roast Beef sandwich (caramelized onions, shaved parmigiano, sundried tomatoes, and sweet mustard garnish), Chicken Tikka sandwich (chicken filet and Tikka Masala sauce) or the Spring Cheese sandwich (mature cheddar, red onions, tomatoes and stilton cheese) are just a few examples of some very tasty varieties. They also have some seasonal specials. For example, I had a sandwich with green asparagus, Parma ham and hollandaise sauce, which was excellent. The chef has a very good sense for the right balance between the ingredients, you can taste all of them, but none is overpowering.
Prices vary between €5.90 and €14.90 . The bread is very good, the ingredients are fresh and the presentation is attentive. I just wish they had a few more vegetarian choices. As the sandwiches are freshly made to order, you can certainly ask for personal preferences.
A bit disappointing however were the salads. The first one (wild rice and mediterranean vegetables) while very good in taste, was served in a plastic bowl, as it came out of the fridge for take away food. The second one (a kind of greek salad with cucumber, onions, feta, olives and tomatoes) was too cold and prepared in a somewhat careless manner. Dommage!

Service is good, and the location, just a few steps from the “Place d’Armes” is excellent. All the food can also be taken away. Breakfast is served in the mornings.
Another plus: Charles is also open on Sundays, which is great considering it is difficult to find a nice spot for an easy lunch on Sundays in Luxembourg City. (update: apparently not anymore)
