The Ampersand Hotel

During my recent visit to London, I stayed at the Ampersand hotel in South Kensington. Opened in 2012, this stylish boutique hotel located in South Kensington offers luxury but affordable sleep (well sort of, but hey it’s London, right?) in a chic area of London.  The hotel is a 2 minutes walk from South Kensington tube station (Circle and District line as well as Piccadilly line). Very close to many museums (V&A, Natural History Museum etc.) and in walking distance from Hyde Park and Harrods, it is also only a couple of stops from Victoria station, which is interesting for all travellers coming from Gatwick airport. Looking for a little bit of luxury but still wanting to stay on a somewhat ok budget, I chose the least expensive (and obviously smallest) room. Upon arrival however the nice staff told me that we benefitted from a complimentary room upgrade. Great! The room had a lovely size so if you do choose the small rooms you should be aware that those rooms are probably very small (but this holds for any big city and should not matter too much if you only want to sleep in your room). The hotel also has some very nice promotional offers on their website (for example stay for 3 nights, pay for 2).

The room comes with some very nice perks: the minibar is totally complimentary (no alcoholic beverages) and there is a proper French press coffee maker with freshly ground coffee (does anyone actually drink the usual instant coffee in hotel rooms??). The bathroom comes with Miller Harris products and whoop whoop has a heated floor, a very nice plus when jumping out of your shower.

The beds were very comfortable and the rooms seem well isolated, although you can hear the tube even from the 5th floor but nothing major and it certainly didn’t stop me from sleeping like a princess.

Breakfast is optional and served in the basement, which also serves as the in-house restaurant Apero. You can either opt for the continental buffet or choose from the quite extensive menu. I had some poached eggs on avocado sourdough toast, which were quite tasty. The coffee is quite nice as well.

We also had dinner at Apero one of the nights. This was a little more disappointing. While the interior is quite nice looking it didn’t manage to convey a dinner like attitude. The location seems more suited to breakfast. The cuisine offers a variety of mediterranean and fusion inspired dishes; you typically choose 2 or 3 for each person and share them (e.g. oxtail gougères, mini beef burgers, arctic char with fennel and blood orange, quail with apple and miso etc.). While the chosen dishes were not bad on their own the whole selection didn’t really fit together and leaves you a bit frustrated. The prices were ok however.

You can also have a classic afternoon tea in the Drawing Rooms.

All in all I can certainly recommend this hotel, primarily for its nice rooms, welcoming service, good location and decent price for this hotel category.
