Fancy a pizza in Lausanne? In a laid-back and friendly atmosphere? Centrally located in rue du Bourg, just off St-Francois, Chez Mario serves mainly pizza but also pasta, meat and fish. The setting – you enter the restaurant through a tunnel-like entrance up to the first floor – may seem a bit rough, with the walls intensely marked with writings of all sorts, but first impressions do not always count. The staff is very friendly and will make its best to find a table for you. Reservation is not necessary, not even on a Friday or Saturday night.
The choice of pizze – obviously cooked in a wood-fired oven – is large and tempting. I went for a pizza with cherry tomatoes, rucola, mozzarella and ricotta while my fiancé chose a Tronchetta with Parma ham, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and bufala mozzarella (added only after cooking, this may not be to the taste of everyone). While I did find the Parma ham a bit too salty, the rest was perfect! A very good dough, not too thin and not too thick, and with truly fresh ingredients. The restaurant gets all its vegetable supply from local producers and also the rest of ingredients are carefully chosen. The price is quite high for a pizza (especially if you usually eat your pizza in Italy): between 14 and 28 CHF. But hey this is Switzerland, and when the quality is right, I find the price acceptable.
Chez Mario is open everyday from 11.30 to 14.30 and 18.30 to 23.30. All pasta dishes and pizze can also be ordered to take away with a discount of 20%.
